Bauru’s
sandwich is connected to both a person and a place. The person is not famous,
however, and there are many sandwiches that are connected with cities around
the world. What makes this sandwich special is the way that the city of Bauru
in São Paulo has embraced it, to the extent that it is named as the city’s
official sandwich, the recipe is set out in municipal law, and there is an
official certification program in place to protect it.
Now those are
the benefits of being well connected.
Incidentally, the sandwich was originally
named after a student who was nicknamed after the city (real name Casimiro
Pinto Neto), who, in 1934, asked for this specific sandwich in his local
student eatery, Ponto Chic.
“Bauru’s
sandwich” fast became the most popular item on the menu.
