Action: Antispasmodics
Hyoscine works by preventing certain chemicals
produced by the body, from interacting with the muscarinic receptors located on
the smooth muscle of the gut. This causes the gut muscle to relax, removing the
pain of colic resulting from the gut muscle contraction and spasm.
Indications:

Abdominal pain associated
with menstrual periods
§
Abdominal pain which comes
and goes (colic)
§ Irritable Bowel Syndrome Contraindications:
§
Abnormal muscle weakness
§
Enlarged prostate
§
Failure of function of part
of the gut causing an obstruction (paralytic ileus)
§
Glaucoma
§
Life long inherited blood
diseases which can cause a variety of symptoms, including mental health
problems (porphyrias)
§ Narrowing of the outlet of the stomach making it difficult for
food to pass into the intestines (pyloric stenosis) Dose:
§
by mouth,
20 mg 4 times daily; CHILD 6–12 years, 10 mg 3 times daily, Irritable bowel
syndrome, 10 mg 3 times daily, increased if required up to 20 mg 4 times daily
§ By intramuscular or intravenous injection, acute
spasm and spasm in diagnostic procedures, 20 mg repeated after 30 minutes if
necessary (may be repeated more frequently in endoscopy); CHILD not recommended Side effects:

Nursing
considerations:-

Have patient void before
taking medication if urinary retention is a problem.
Monitor for signs and symptoms of allergy to drug
